Searching for whales

"Sharlene Khan (ZSTT) along with Manatee Conservation Trust Volunteers, Rachael and Racquel Lutchmedial, and ZSTT Marine Coordinator,  Richard Joseph, deploy hydrophones in search of “whales”.

Earlier last week, the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago’s (ZSTT) marine coordinator, Richard Joseph took a research team led by the ZSTT’s President, Gupte Lutchmedial out in the waters off the Northwest peninsula in search of whales.

Manzanilla kids celebrate SEA success at Zoo

During the last week of the school term, following the results of the SEA Examination, over 150 students who live around Nariva and attend Manzanilla Government Primary School and Plum Mitan Presbyterian Primary School were accommodated by the Manatee Conservation Trust with an educational visit to the Emperor Valley Zoo.

Aliah is Manzanilla's top student

Young volunteer, Aliah James is presented with a token of recognition from the Manatee Conservation Trust for her outstanding performance at the SEA.


For the Manzanilla Government Primary School, it was a day of celebration when Aliah James got her SEA result and saw that she had passed for her first choice, Bishop Anstey High School East in Trincity.

Disoriented Turtle Hatchlings: Not Unusual for Manzanilla Beach

The video posted on facebook of disoriented leatherback hatchlings crossing the road at Manzanilla this season highlights a problem faced by the patrols on this beach for many years now. In fact, there are reports that this has been happening since twenty years ago, and responsible factors are known now to be the lights of passing vehicles, streetlights, lights from houses along the beachfront and even agricultural fires left burning in the night.
